A few weekends ago, I attended a Military Newsvideo Workshop. The US Army Reserve Command at Fort McPherson, GA sponsors the workshop. The workshop is a three-day event where three members of the NPPA, a professional photojournalists association, teach reserve soldiers basic story-telling techniques, give tips on lighting, interviewing, three-shot sequencing, and camera techniques. DINFOS gave me some fundamentals on how to shoot video. This workshop taught me the art of the subtle surprise and what separates local news videography from home movies. Needless to say, it takes a lot of practice.
This is the first video i did in the three day workshop. They gave us a topic and we had to make up a story and get our team to act it out. We could only use four minutes of raw footage and then had to cut it down to a minute. My topic the first day was smoking. So my focus statement was “Brian is a frustrated smoker.”

By the third day, I was told my sequencing and editing was better. I still need practice on my storytelling. I figure I’ll get a lot of practice. I had to do something showing how kids were creative, so my focus was “abby likes singing.”

Adam, The video is good, but I can’t receive the sound. Is it just me and my poor technical skills?
There is no sound. That was part of the exercise.
