Time in Atlanta

I’m sure I have plenty to write about, but I’m going to keep it a little short. I’m still working on a new site. I think it’ll be pretty cool, but I need some continuous time to get it done. I just haven’t had that yet.

I hopped on a plane last Thursday to spend some time in Atlanta for my new unit the 343rd MPAD out of North Little Rock, Arkansas. This past weekend I got to attend a Military NewsVideo Workshop. We had three videographers who have won numerous emmy’s and regional and national photographer of the year awards. The greatest part of the weekend was learning how to tell a story in one to two minutes. Every day we performed a practical exercise where they gave us a scenario and we had to make a story out of it, without sound. I have them on tape. When I hit drill this weekend, I’ll try to put them on DVD. My stories were OK, but my edits and sequencing got better each of the three days. It’s so important to plan ahead, if possible.

The rest of my week is being spent at the DVIDS Hub in Atlanta. DVIDS is how the Department of Defense through the Army gets news stories, B-roll, and live interviews to local and national media outlets. Their bread and butter seems to be getting the holiday greetings you see on local news shows, “shout-outs” to sports teams you’ll see at stadiums and B-roll for breaking news stories in the war zone. I think the real asset is their contacts within the media to market the Army’s story. You can see some of the stuff they have at http://www.dvidshub.net/.

I’ll add more later. I’m reading a great book and I need to finish it.
