I’ve discussed my favorite sports teams on this site in the past. I’m starting to notice a pattern that I have an obcession with underdogs. My lone exception is the team I grew up loving, the University of Oklahoma Sooners.
The club football (soccer) season has begun. Last week my favorite team in the English Premier League, Fulham Football Club, lost to a freshly promoted team. See, Fulham escaped being sent down to the league below on the last day of the league. In case you aren’t familier with the system, the bottom three teams in the EPL are demoted an d the top three teams from the league below take their place. Fulham lost to a team away who were playing their first game ever in the top flight, Hull City. The script from last year seemed to be in force this year. Fulham got an early lead and then loses the game. Happened way too often last year.
After losing to a newly promoted side, Fulham gets to play Arsenal at Craven Cottage (home) and Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. These two sides have finished in the top 4 for many years. They are good teams where teams like Fulham consider it a sucess to get a draw when playing them. There is a good book called, Fever Pitch about an American that sells his soul and becomes an Arsenal fan. I’m not editorializing, I swear
The unexpected happened on Saturday. Fulham went up on Arsenal here’s a highlight in Spanish
They win the game 1-0 and now the rollercoaster of Fulham Football begins. I don’t think this could be my only win, but last year and the year before they fought to stay from being relegated. I don’t need that this year. My other underdog teams aren’t doing so well. It’s a good thing my Kansas City Royals can’t be relegated. The Texas Rangers are mediocre. I have no idea how TCU football will perform. The homer in me is predicting 11-2, but realistically we could have another 8-5 year. I got to know Fulham because they had a ton of Americans on the team. Now, the only American is Clint Dempsey, who hasn’t started but has appeared in both games.
You can read reviews by guys that know what they are talking about from Craven Cottage Newsround and Fulham USA.
